Hunter Shirts

Shop Hunter Shirts for men, cut for a fit that holds its shape.

What makes a shirt a hunter shirt

Four pockets, and all of them working. The hunter shirt, also called a safari or bush shirt, was cut for people who needed to carry things without a bag: two at the chest and two at the waist, each with a pleat so it holds something without pulling the front out of shape. Everything else about it — the collar, the length, the cloth — follows from that.

Hunter shirt or overshirt

An overshirt is worn as a light jacket over something else. A hunter shirt does both jobs: buttoned with the sleeves down it reads as outerwear, and open over a plain tee it is a shirt. That is the argument for owning one rather than both, and it is why it is cut longer than a normal shirt with a curved hem that stays tidy worn out.

The Rajputana Edition

The Rajputana Edition is our pure linen line, cut with a point collar and slanted lower pockets rather than the camp collar of the cotton shirts, and marked by a sun motif embroidered in gold thread at the chest. It is the dressier of the two: linen at this weight creases, which is what tells you it is linen rather than a blend pretending to be one.

Wearing one in Indian weather

Cotton twill carries the structure the pockets need and stays wearable most of the year. Pure linen is the answer for April through July, when anything heavier stops being a choice. Both are cut with room through the body, because a four-pocket shirt worn tight looks like a costume.

Common questions

What is a hunter shirt?

A shirt with four buttoned patch pockets, two at the chest and two at the waist, cut longer than an ordinary shirt so it can be worn out. It is also called a safari shirt or a bush shirt. The pockets are functional rather than decorative, which is what separates it from a shirt with pocket-shaped stitching.

What is the difference between a hunter shirt and a safari shirt?

Nothing meaningful. They are the same garment under two names, along with bush shirt and ranger shirt. The four-pocket front is the defining feature in all of them.

What is a Rajputi shirt?

Rajputi refers to the traditional dress of Rajasthan. Our Rajputana Edition is a modern reading of it rather than traditional wear: a pure linen four-pocket shirt carrying a gold-embroidered sun motif, cut with a point collar and slanted lower pockets.

Can you wear a hunter shirt as a jacket?

Yes, and it is cut for it. Buttoned with the sleeves down over a plain tee it works as a light overshirt; open it is a shirt. The cotton twill holds the shape better for jacket duty, the linen is the cooler of the two.

How should a hunter shirt fit?

With room through the body. The pockets need a flat front to sit properly, and a four-pocket shirt pulled tight across the chest looks like fancy dress. Size for the shoulders and let the body sit loose.
