Shirts

Shop Shirts for men, cut for a fit that holds its shape.

What makes a good shirt

Three things, in this order: where the shoulder seam lands, what the cloth is, and how the collar holds. Everything else is preference. A shoulder seam that sits past the point of your shoulder makes an expensive shirt look cheap, and no amount of tailoring elsewhere recovers it.

Choosing by fabric rather than by look

  • Linen for real heat. Coolest of the common shirtings, and it creases, which is the cost of that.
  • Cotton and linen blends for most of the year. Close to linen for airflow with far less creasing.
  • Oxford cotton for a shirt that has to look the same at six in the evening as it did at nine.
  • Flannel for the short Indian winter, and for the north.

How the range here is organised

By what you would actually filter for: checks, stripes, linen, and the four-pocket hunter shirts. Every product page states the fabric, the fit and the cut, because those are the three things that decide whether a shirt gets worn or hangs.

Common questions

How should a shirt fit?

The shoulder seam should sit exactly on the point of your shoulder, the cuff should stop at the base of your thumb, and you should be able to pinch two to three inches of cloth at either side of your chest. Fit the shoulders first; everything else can be altered and that cannot.

Which shirt fabric is best for Indian weather?

Linen for April through July, a cotton-linen blend for most of the rest of the year. Pure cotton is comfortable but holds heat more than linen at the same weight, and flannel only makes sense in a northern winter.

How many shirts should a man own?

Fewer than most people do, in fabrics that suit where they live. Two plain in linen or a linen blend, one check, one stripe and one white covers nearly everything most wardrobes are asked to do.
